Beyond Strength and Speed Insights into Elite Running Back Performance - Coach Jay Williams3/9/2024 When it comes to football, the running back position is often glamorized for its highlight-reel potential. However, the real story of becoming an elite running back is much more complex and cerebral than simply breaking tackles and sprinting for touchdowns. In the latest podcast episode, Coach Mikki and Coach Jay Williams dissect what truly defines the performance of top-tier running backs.
The episode kicks off with a foundational discussion about the qualities that make an elite running back. While speed and size are often considered paramount, Coach Williams emphasizes the importance of heart, determination, and a role that's increasingly involved in the passing game. The conversation moves to the critical skill of field vision, starting beyond the line of scrimmage. This aspect of the game is where many running backs struggle, but it is also what distinguishes the good from the great. The ability to see and react to the developing play while mastering the second and third levels of defense is what allows running backs to excel. As the episode progresses, the focus shifts to the evolution of the running back position, including the shift towards smaller, quicker backs who bring agility and adaptability to the field. Here, football IQ takes center stage. The coaches discuss vision drills that enhance awareness and the strategic reading of blocks, which can be the difference between a short gain and a breakaway run. The heart and determination required to navigate the chaos of the line of scrimmage and find the right running lanes cannot be understated. The third segment delves into the tactical elements of being a running back, with pre-snap reads being a particular point of interest. The ability to anticipate defensive formations and adapt to them even before the play unfolds is crucial for success. This segment also explores the philosophy of trusting one's instincts on the field and the importance of quick decision-making in the moment.

Finally, the responsibilities and insights into a running back's role are examined. Coach Williams shares strategies for effectively handling defensive challenges and emphasizes the need for mental toughness when facing larger opponents. The conversation also touches upon the evolution of offensive formations, highlighting the increased responsibilities of running backs in modern football. The chapter concludes with a powerful message about commitment, vision, and decision-making, and the inspiring potential of any athlete who dares to carry the pigskin. The podcast episode provides listeners with a playbook of information that can help any aspiring running back elevate their game. It also serves as an insightful resource for coaches and football enthusiasts who wish to deepen their understanding of the game. This comprehensive breakdown of the elite running back's role offers a fresh perspective on what it takes to succeed in one of football's most dynamic positions. Throughout the discussion, key takeaways are reinforced: the significance of vision, football IQ, the patience to read and react to blocks, and the physical and mental resilience required to withstand the rigors of the gridiron. As the episode wraps up, listeners are left with a renewed appreciation for the cerebral game played by those who excel at running back, along with actionable advice for those seeking to reach their full potential in this demanding position. Our football programs are now beginning in July. As we know July and August are some of the hotttest months for practice.
We need to be aware of heat illness when are players are on our field. As a coach and a mom I have seen it myself personally where a player has the beginning stages of heat illness. On my field, I take this the very serious. I tell my players they need to let me know in the event they feel any of the symptoms listed below. As a coaches we need to be aware of our players. Many times they won't say anything with the fear of being seen as weak. This is not a sign of weakness this is a sign of life and death. period!!! Summer practice should be a time of learning and getting ready for the upcoming season.
